The Original Sushi Competition was founded as part of 'Japan
2001' (Year of Cultural Exchange), and continues to increase
awareness of Japanese culture through the medium of Japanese
food. The contest was the brainchild of Mr Kazuhiro Marumo,
Managing Director of Cross Media (publisher of Eat-Japan magazine)
Mr Marumo envisaged it as the ideal vehicle for the aims of
"Japan 2001", and a chance to create new kinds of
fusion-sushi combining traditional Japanese technique with
the British love of sushi.
Entrants are required
to create their own original sushi recipes. Since the competition
is open to all ages, there are two categories; adults and children.
The Mini Event generated
a lot of interest in the competition from schools and colleges.
Two Sushi Masters from Japan were invited by the Original Sushi
Competition to tour a range of schools and catering colleges
and demonstrate the art of sushi making. The Original Sushi
Competition 2003 received about 600 entries, and was more successful
than last year's competition.The
final event was held in Central London and was attended
by 200 guests including celebrity chefs, press, finalists and
their families, plus lucky members of the public.
