To be held during the build up to the Original Sushi Competition 2004's final event, series of Related Events encourage entries and raise awareness of sushi in the UK.
Event 1: The Launch
Mon. 23 February. '04 12:00-15:00
Location: Zilli Fish Too (restaurant)

Celebrity chef/restaurateur Aldo Zilli, founder of the Zilli restaurants, had been challenged by the competition to prove that sushi could be adapted and served with other cuisines, and on 23rd February 04, press and guests including the Japanese Ambassador crowded into his Italian restaurant Zilli Fish Too to witness Zilli, the competition’s two visiting Sushi Masters and its main chef demonstrate a range of brand new sushi starter dishes that included ingredients associated with Italian cuisine. The event marked the combined launch of the restaurant’s ‘Japanese Week’ (during which the new dishes featured on its menu) and the competition’s ‘Related Event’ series.
Event 2: 'City Sushi' contest

City workers rolled up their shirt-sleeves and rolled up their sushi rolls in a City Sushi contest that took place during the Moshi Moshi Sushi restaurant event. Regular customers of the restaurant were invited for this event and the winner of the contest, Becca Baily, said that she thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would definitely be entering the competition.
Event 3: The School Event

On the 26th of February, pupils of Christ Church CE Junior School tried their hands at making sushi in a fun, educational event for which Henry Harris of Racine restaurant and Silla Bjerrum of Feng Sushi restaurants assisted. This event included demonstrations by the sushi Master Chefs of beautiful doll, flag and fish shaped decorative sushi dishes associated with the Japanese boy and girl day celebrations, which fascinated and inspired the children and motivated them to enter the competition.
Event 4: The College Event

On the 1st of March, two events were held at Leeds’ Thomas Danby College, the first of which was for children and was similar to the School Event described above. For the second event, the visiting sushi Master Chefs taught a sushi master-class to students of the college, which included such essentials as how to handle sensitive foods like raw fish hygienically, knife skills and sushi forming techniques. The students also sampled sushi rice, which greatly motivated them for the following important lesson on how to make it.

Masayoshi Kazato
Owner/chef of Sakae Sushi restaurant and Deputy PR Director of All Japan Sushi Associations

A professional sushi chef for 35 years, Mr. Kazato is passionate about sharing the art of sushi with others. He holds many titles of responsibility with organisations and committees pertaining to sushi and his own sushi restaurant is so popular that queues form outside it.

Experience abroad:
Since 1997: he has been involved with the annual All America Sakura Festival
1999: demonstrated at the Japanese Embassy in Washington DC’s SushiExhibition
Since 2000: he has been a contest director and judge for the annual All America Sushi Skill Contest
2000: Involved with Sakura Festival, Germany, organised to celebrate the completion of
the Japanese consulate in Berlin
2002: Involved with charity sushi event in the USA in aid of 9/11 disaster
: Involved with charity sushi event in aid of the Czech Republic flood disaster relief effort held at the Japanese Embassy, Czech Republic.
2003: Lectured and demonstrated for the Original Sushi Competition 2003 in the UK
2004: Lectured to over 600 professionals and students at the California Culinary Academy, San Francisco, USA
 
Haruyoshi Matsuda
Owner/chef of Dai Sushi restaurant and PR member of All Japan Sushi Association. With over 35 years of experience, Mr.Matsuda holds titles with many sushi-related organisations and committees and has lectured extensively on the subject of sushi in Japan and around world.

Experiences abroad:
